Causes of Depersonalization

Depersonalization is the feeling of unreality, detachment or feeling divorced or distanced from oneself. Although initially one feels confused and upset, learning exactly what it is, what it is not and how to overcome this sensation helps reach a rapid and permanent recovery.

Many often feel that depersonalization seems to come “out of the blue,” but after further examination one can often trace the trigger which caused this feeling to surface.

It is important to state, upfront, that true depersonalization is not an illness and is not dangerous. It is a learned behavior that can be simple “unlearned.” Although one feels “stuck” with these intrusive sensations, there is a “tried and true” definite treatment that allows full recovery to occur.

Causes of Depersonalization:

(1) Extreme Stress: This trigger could be caused by prolonged worry concerning many factors:
– Prolonged Physical Illness
– Financial Difficulties
– Prolonged Anxiety Condition
– Relationship Difficulties

(2) Brain Stress: We give brain stress it’s own separate category because there are many causes of brain stress:
– THC found in Marijuana may cause enough stress to the brain which could lead to depersonalization.
– Excessive use of Alcohol
– LSD or other Psychoactive Drugs
– Ketamine Use

(3) Prescription Medications: There are prescription medications that could result in these adverse reactions:
– Minocycline has been one medication might result in depersonalization as a side effect.
– Antidepressants have been reported to cause feelings of unreality in many individuals.
– Benzodiazepine withdrawal may cause depersonalization in many individuals.

(4) Pre-Workout Formulas have been reported to cause feelings of anxiety and depersonalization during usage and also during withdrawal from the formula.

(5) Severe Stress Situations and traumatic events:
– War
– Violence
– Military Combat
– Abuse

(6) Migraine Headaches have also been reported to create feelings of depersonalization.

(7) Intense and Prolonged Fearful Worry: The element of fear plays a large part in prolonging the condition.
– Intensified worry causes the Amygdala (fear portion of the brain) to become dominant. This
results in the suppression of the rational and learning centers of the brain which allows the body
to maximize the “fight or flight” response to defend against perceived dangers.

Understanding the cause of depersonalization is often quite helpful but not the entire road to recovery. Once you understand what might have triggered these sensations, it is now time to interrupt the cycle that fuels this condition. When one learns to correctly interrupt this cycle, clarity and peace of mind returns.

Through complete understanding, application of very specific behavioral modifications, along with the proper nutrition and menu plan (to boost Serotonin levels in the brain naturally and maintain balanced blood sugar levels), one will find a rapid recovery awaits them.
